Dog Treat Toys: How Dogs Get the Food Out

Push, lick and work food out

Editor Dali·Published

Illustrative photo · KONG Company · Size or aspect ratio adjusted

Dog treat toys let dogs push food out, lick food spread on a surface, or work treats out of rubber cavities. Even within one brand, chewing uses and cleaning methods differ. Start with how your dog accesses the food, and you can plan for both preparation and cleanup.

At a glance

  • Toys that release food when pushed offer a different kind of play from fixed licking boards.
  • Choose rubber chew toys by their food-holding grooves and cavities.
  • Wobbler is top-rack dishwasher safe; Licks requires hand-washing.

If your dog grabs and chews toys, being able to fill one with treats is not enough reason to choose it. Food-dispensing toys and rubber toys designed for chewing work differently. You also need to follow the requirement to stay nearby and supervise.

Where does the food go? Will your dog push it out or hold the toy and lick? How will you wash it afterward? Distinguishing between a body that moves across the floor, a board that attaches to a wall, and grooves that grip treats helps narrow down the kind of play you need.

How can you serve food so your dog moves after it? Wobbler rocks and spins when pushed with a nose or paw. That movement releases food. It suits pushing a toy across the floor to get food out, rather than licking a board fixed in one place.

Twist off the top and fill it with kibble or small treats. Secure the top firmly after filling. You can also serve your dog's usual portion inside instead of using a bowl, with no more than 1 cup per filling. The filling compartment opens, and the toy can go on the dishwasher's top rack. It is a good choice if you want a toy that comes apart for cleaning.

Wobbler is not a chew toy. In Sabine's Vetsend review, the dog was initially hesitant about the noise it made hitting furniture. Later, the dog played enthusiastically with its paws. An official-store reviewer also reported that their dog was still learning how it worked, so do not expect every dog to master it immediately.

Watch out
Must not be used for chewing

Want to combine chewing a ball with getting treats out? Stuff-A-Ball is a natural rubber ball for chewing and fetching after a throw. Food goes in two places: the outer grooves and the hollow center. It is a good choice if you want a ball with different ways to fill it.

Spread paste in the outer grooves and put kibble or biscuits in the center. One product lets your dog lick the outside and work food out of the inside. Unlike Wobbler, it is also described as suitable for chewing and fetch without treats.

In MICHELE K.'s official-store review, both dogs enjoyed getting treats out after the ball was filled with kibble and paste. LaVaDu also described a dog following and playing with the ball when it contained dog food. For strong chewers, consider the size and rubber type too. The manufacturer advises considering one or two sizes larger or an Extreme product. Being made of rubber is no reason to skip choosing the right size.

Watch out
Choose the size and rubber range carefully for strong chewers

There are four places to put treats. Goodie Ribbon holds treats in four Goodie Grippers compartments. Dogs work food out from between the internal ridges, offering a different kind of play from pushing Wobbler to make food fall out.

Want to divide treats among several compartments? Choose this product if you want to use all four spaces. The Extreme natural rubber is intended for strong chewers. Pet Circle does not recommend this product for senior pets needing a softer material or young puppies with fragile teeth. Consider both the number of compartments and its chewing function when choosing.

Experiences vary. An official-store review describes a pit bull using it for several years. By contrast, SarahW said their 200 lb mastiff loved the toy, but it was no longer big enough and the dog tore chunks off too quickly, so they had to stop buying it. They hoped an XL version would be made. JustJackie reported that the dog liked the treat compartments but found the product quite heavy. One dog's experience of long-lasting use cannot be applied to every dog.

Want your dog to lick in one place without rolling a toy across the floor? Licks attaches to a flat surface with two suction cups. Fill its bumps and grooves with food for your dog to lick. It suits owners who want to spread food on a surface rather than have their dog chase a moving toy.

The instructions describe putting paste or food among the differently shaped bumps. It must be washed by hand. Unlike dishwasher-safe Wobbler, this is a product to choose with manual cleanup in mind.

In Mieke's Vetsend review, a toy poodle used size L and stayed interested in the different surface shapes for a while. Treat this as one owner's experience. Do not let your dog bite and chew Licks, and remove it once the food is gone. Securing it with suction cups does not make it suitable for unsupervised use.

Watch out

Retailer Pets at Home lists Extreme Tires as not suitable for puppies. The same listing also says all ages, so the puppy exclusion is attributed to this retailer rather than presented as a universal product restriction.

Extreme Tires holds treats along its inner wall. The instructions describe putting Snacks or Easy Treat inside while retaining the tire shape. It is a good choice if you want food tucked inside a rim rather than in the center of a ball. However, Pets at Home reviewer viv found it good for chewing and fetch but not so good for putting treats in.

The sidewalls compress and spring back. It can also be used for chewing and fetch. Can your dog chew and play with it without food? Yes: the manufacturer identifies this natural rubber product as a chew toy. The Extreme name, however, does not guarantee that it cannot break.

In KIM S.'s official-store review, a Yorkshire terrier that chews strongly spent a long time playing with it. DENISE S., meanwhile, found that it held up well but was small for a fully grown German shepherd. These experiences show why both a dog's size and chewing habits matter, even with the same product.

Choosing in more detail

  • If you want to turn mealtime into play — Wobbler. Serve your dog's usual portion without a bowl, with no more than 1 cup per filling.
  • If you want different ways to fill one ball — KONG Stuff-A-Ball. Use the outer grooves and central cavity to put paste and kibble in different places.
  • If you want your dog to work held treats out of several spaces — KONG Extreme Goodie Ribbon. Choose its four compartments, and also consider the right size for a strong chewer.
  • If you can hand-wash after feeding — Licks. Attach it to a flat surface and remove it as soon as licking play is over.
  • If you want a tire-shaped chew toy — KONG Extreme Tires. Its inner wall can hold treats.

Ask before you go

1Can I leave these with my dog while I am away?

All five products require owner supervision. Stop use and remove them if damaged. This also applies to rubber toys designed for chewing.

2Can I give my dog a new toy straight out of the package?

For Wobbler and the rubber toys, follow the manufacturer's instructions and remove all packaging and packaging attachments. Do not leave attached packaging on the product as part of the toy.

3Should I always choose the same size for a strong chewer?

The Stuff-A-Ball guidance advises considering one or two sizes larger or an Extreme product. The Extreme Goodie Ribbon guidance also says strong chewers may need one or two sizes larger. Check each product's instructions separately before choosing.
