October in Korea: Reed Fields or Lantern Lights?

From reed-bed walks to lantern-lit nights, five places to visit in October

Editor Five·Published

Image · Five

What kind of autumn would you like to discover this October? Walk among the reeds at Suncheon Bay Wetland, or watch lanterns light up the river in Jinju. The silver grass at Seoul’s Haneul Park and the autumn trails of Seoraksan and Naejangsan are just as inviting. Whether you have a day or a whole weekend, follow the autumn scenery you most want to see.

At a glance

  • Explore four destinations for October scenery and events, plus Naejangsan as an alternative that may require a change of dates.
  • Head to Suncheon Bay Wetland for reeds and sunsets, or Jinju for lantern-lit nights during the festival.
  • Walk through silver grass at Seoul Haneul Park, or choose Jujeongol Valley in Seoraksan for a longer valley walk.
  • Naejangsan's fall colors may still be incomplete in late October, so leave room to move your trip to November.

Choosing an October weekend destination means deciding both when you can go and what you want to see. The lantern festival has a fixed closing date, while fall colors do not follow the calendar. Even within a fall trip, your destination will depend on whether you can stay after dark and how far you want to walk.

Suncheon Bay Wetland comes to mind for reed-bed walks, and Jinju for an illuminated riverfront. Seoul Haneul Park pairs silver grass with city views, while Seoraksan offers walks along a valley. Unlike those four destinations with October attractions, Naejangsan is an alternative whose foliage needs checking even at the end of the month. If a tunnel of red leaves is your goal, you may need to change your travel dates.

#1Best for You want reeds and sunset on an October weekend

Suncheon Bay Wetland (순천만습지)

Tripadvisor 4.6/5 (289 reviews), Trip.com 4.7/5 (55 reviews)

Alternative with limitations Yongsan Observatory is about another 30 minutes on foot from the entrance to Yongsan. If you plan to reach the observatory, allow plenty of time before the last admission.

Come here if you want to walk among reeds and stay for sunset. Suncheon Bay's reeds turn yellow in September–October. Reed beds and tidal flats stretch alongside the wooden trails. It suits a trip spent lingering by the water rather than climbing to a mountain summit.

For a view down over the S-shaped waterway, head up to Yongsan Observatory. It is about another 30 minutes on foot from the entrance to Yongsan. Allow more time than you would for a reed-bed walk alone. It is easy to focus on sunset and forget the return walk. Arriving just before the last admission leaves you rushing to the observatory.

Watch out
Allow time for the uphill walk to the observatory and the return journey; take care on the trails after dark

Head to Jinju for nighttime scenery in early to mid-October. You can see floating lanterns on the Namgang River and displays inside Jinjuseong Fortress. This year's lanterns also feature King Sejong and Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. Instead of waiting for leaves to change color, you can plan around the time the lights come on.

The festival ends on October 18, though. Do not expect the same lantern displays on later weekends. Even during the festival, there is no need to cover the entire riverfront. Choosing a stretch where you can see the lanterns up close makes it easier to manage the walking.

Watch out
The festival will be over on October 24–25 and 31; past reviews mention crowds and restroom queues

If an overnight trip farther away is difficult, see silver grass in Seoul. Haneul Park combines silver-grass fields with views toward the Hangang River. There is something appealing about walking through grasslands against a backdrop of city buildings. It suits a weekend devoted to photos and strolling rather than hiking.

The stroll does not begin as soon as you step off the subway. You still need to get from the station to the hilltop park. The Maengkkongi shuttle can save you the climb, but allow for weekend queues. Check this year's silver-grass festival and extended evening hours separately before leaving. An ordinary park walk and a festival visit call for different plans.

Jujeongol Valley suits anyone who wants a substantial valley walk with fall foliage. Follow the route from Osaek Mineral Spring toward Yongso Falls. Rocky scenery, the valley and wooden boardwalks appear along the way. This is more about enjoying fall beside the water than standing on a summit.

The Korea National Park Service lists the round-trip distance as 6.4km. Add photo stops and rests, and it is hard to treat this as a quick stroll. First consider how far everyone in your group can walk. It is a good choice if you would enjoy the valley even before the leaves fully turn. If red foliage is your sole reason for going, check the scenery just before departure.

Watch out
Peak foliage dates for 2026 are unconfirmed; allow for the round-trip walk and weather-related closures

If you can add vacation days in late October, keep Naejangsan as an alternative. Uhwajeong Pavilion and the fall foliage tunnel are on the Naejangsa Temple side in Jeongeup. You can see the pavilion reflected in the water and paths between trees without climbing to a summit. It suits those who prefer a walk through fall woodland to a steep hike.

The issue is when the leaves turn. An official field report from October 26, 2023, showed that they were only beginning to change. In 2025, a review reported that the foliage tunnel was still not fully red in early November. It is difficult to recommend this as a destination for red foliage in early or mid-October. Even at the end of the month, check the woodland's condition and be prepared to move your trip to November.

Choosing in more detail

  • If you want to linger over reeds and evening reflections — Suncheon Bay Wetland. Leave enough time to walk to the observatory.
  • If you can stay after dark in early to mid-October — Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival. See the lantern displays, but schedule your visit before the festival ends.
  • If you want a day of fall walking in Seoul — Seoul Haneul Park. Combine silver-grass fields with Hangang River views, and include the uphill approach in your schedule.
  • If time spent walking through a valley is the point of your trip — Seoraksan National Park's Jujeongol Valley. Match your companions' pace rather than focusing only on peak foliage.
  • If even your late-month dates are flexible — Naejangsan National Park. If red foliage is your goal, postpone until November if local conditions call for it.

Ask before you go

1Can I follow the same routes on a rainy weekend?

Mountain trails may close because of rain or other weather conditions. For Seoraksan and Naejangsan, first check the Korea National Park Service's closures for that day. Suncheon Bay Wetland, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival and Haneul Park are also primarily outdoor visits. If you want an indoor trip out of the rain, it is better to choose another destination.

2Where should I go if fall foliage is essential on an early-October weekend?

It is difficult to confirm peak foliage for a particular weekend at this point. Even within Seoraksan, the scenery varies by route and elevation. If your dates cannot change, consider reed or silver-grass walks, or lantern displays with fixed dates, rather than an itinerary that promises foliage color alone.

3Can I cover the entire route with a stroller or wheelchair?

A park's name alone cannot tell you whether its full route is accessible. Check the gradients and transport options separately for Suncheon Bay's observatory, the approach to Haneul Park and mountain trails. First identify the step-free sections your companion needs, then contact the management office.

4Can I combine two destinations in one weekend?

Without a starting point, it is difficult to give a single travel-time estimate. First decide what you want to see at one destination, then check transport there and back. For places such as Jinju, where nighttime viewing matters, secure your return transport before adding another stop.
