At a glance

  • Collection rooms and self-study rooms keep different hours. Choose your reading material and the space you need first.
  • Jeongdok is useful for language, literature and genealogies; Namsan for Korean literature. Maporium’s art books and picture books are for on-site reading.
  • Associate membership allows physical borrowing at Seoul Metropolitan Library but covers facility use at education office libraries. Check the different membership requirements.

Choosing a book to read on the spot calls for a different space from settling in with your own study materials. Some self-study rooms stay open after the collection rooms close. Your first visit will also be easier if you distinguish the process for getting a borrowing card from the process for using a seat.

Collections and reading spaces Choose both the shelves that interest you and the space where you want to spend time.

Hours and closures Check collection-room closing times, study-room closing times and regular closure days separately.

Transport and access Compare walking routes from station exits with routes involving a bus transfer.

Seats and borrowing eligibility Distinguish on-site reading, seat reservations or allocation, and borrowing materials to take home.

For an unhurried browse through Korean literature, Namsan Public Library in Huam-dong is a good fit. The literature room and Korean literature collection hold criticism and literary history as well as poetry and novels. Literature from other countries is available in the same collection room. It is a useful place to move from a work itself to its background.

Spaces are divided between the 3rd-floor literature room and the 5th-floor reading rooms and laptop room. The bibliotherapy and language room closes earlier than the literature room on weekdays. After 18:00 on weekdays, however, you can request its materials at the literature room desk. Present a printout showing the location of the book you need.
