Four indexes, measured in September 2026 — search interest, cumulative mentions, news in the past 60 days, and fit with a September event — picked these five hotspots. Jamsil, Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil, Seongsu-dong, Gwangalli, Myeongdong. They are listed in the order that answers where to go this weekend and over the Chuseok holiday.
The ranking
Ordered by overall index (interest, reviews, buzz, fit; 0–100), which sets the star score
At a glance
- Four indexes decide the order: search interest (Naver DataLab), cumulative mentions, news in the past 60 days, and fit with a September event. Places that only appeared in the news as a name were dropped.
- Jamsil takes first place: the Lotte World autumn festival opened on 12 September and its search interest is the highest of the ten candidates. Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil is second, with the National Heritage Night Tour on 18–20 September and a city reputation index up more than fourfold in a month.
- Seongsu-dong has a relay of September pop-ups, Gwangalli a 3,000-drone Chuseok show, and Myeongdong the flagship openings of an era of 10 million foreign visitors.
- All five are walkable from a subway station. Weekend crowds are heaviest in Seongsu-dong and at Gwangalli on Saturday night.
When the weekend comes around, the search often starts with "where is busy right now". The name may be familiar, but if nothing is actually on that week, all you bring home is a queue and one photo.
This piece looked first at whether something really opens in September, not at fame. We measured how high search interest ran on Naver, how often each place had been mentioned over time, and how much news broke in the past two months, then kept only the places with a confirmed September event or opening.
So the names may be familiar, but the reasons are new. Jamsil has the Lotte World autumn festival, Gyeongju the National Heritage Night Tour, Seongsu a relay of pop-ups, Gwangalli the Chuseok drone show, and Myeongdong its returning flagships.

September changes theme week by week. The 5th brings Melody of the Forest, the 12th a show marking the 2026 LCK final, and the 19th For Shining Youth. The Chuseok special on the 26th combines 3,000 drones with a laser show. It runs once only, at 20:00.
A March headline read "crowds at the drone show have grown sharply", and traffic around the beach is closed off on show days. Busan came second in the September city brand reputation ranking and beat Seoul on the communication index.
- Watch out
- allow for Saturday night crowds and the traffic restrictions. Weeknights without a drone show are quiet.

This suits anyone looking for somewhere to take a friend from abroad. Seven in ten foreign visitors to Korea come to Myeongdong, and arrivals in the first half reached 10.71 million, a record for a half-year.
Uniqlo returned after five years with a global flagship on 25 May, three floors and 3,254 sqm, and Musinsa Standard Myeongdong Central reopened in September, expanded from the first basement level to the fourth floor. Some 20 fashion and beauty stores have moved in over the past two years.
The vacancy rate tells the story. Myeongdong stood at 47.2% in the third quarter of 2021 and came down to 4.4% in the second quarter of 2026. Search interest is the lowest of the five, but card spending by foreign visitors rose 50.8% year on year.

Choosing in more detail
- If you have a whole day of the Chuseok holiday — Jamsil. The festival by day, the parade at 20:20, Seokchon Lake at night, all from one station.
- If it is just one night this weekend — Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil. The night tour runs to the night of the 20th, and after that the next date is the Silla Cultural Festival on 9 October.
- If rain is forecast — Seongsu-dong. Pop-ups are indoors, so the weather matters less, and you walk between Seoulsup Station and Seongsu Station.
- If you are in Busan on Saturday the 26th — Gwangalli. The 3,000-drone special runs once only at 20:00, so take your spot early.
- If you have guests from abroad — Myeongdong. The Uniqlo and Musinsa flagships and a tax-refund pharmacy sit on one street.
- If you dislike crowds — the fortress side of Gyeongju. The night tour widened its area to spread the Hwangnidan-gil crowd toward the fortress.
Event dates are the official notices as of this article's research date. Outdoor shows can change with the weather, so check the official page once more before you set out.
Ask before you go
- 1Why is Jamsil, first in search volume, above Seongsu-dong?
Because its overall index across the four measures is higher. Search interest and recent news are the highest of the candidates, and there is a festival that opened on 12 September. Seongsu-dong has more cumulative mentions, but its search interest is less than half of Jamsil's.
- 2Why are Seochon, Yeonnam-dong and Euljiro missing?
They did appear in articles as hotspots, but we could not confirm a September event or a new opening. That condition is essential here, so they dropped out of the shortlist.
- 3What happens to the Gwangalli drone show if it rains?
It is an outdoor show, so it can be called off depending on the weather. Check the official Gwangalli M Drone Light Show notice on the day.
- 4Is there anything to see in Gyeongju after the night tour ends?
Hwangnidan-gil, Daereungwon and the Woljeonggyo night view are there all year. The Silla Cultural Festival runs from 9 to 11 October at Bonghwangdae and Woljeonggyo Bridge.
- 5Do Seongsu-dong pop-ups need a booking?
Most are free to enter, but some take advance bookings or QR entry applications. On busy days, applications have closed early.
- 6Is Myeongdong worth it for Koreans too?
The Uniqlo global flagship and Musinsa Standard Myeongdong Central are among the largest stores of their kind in the country. With so many foreign shoppers, weekend afternoons get crowded.
