Four days with something on

The 2026 Chuseok holiday runs four days, Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September, and even the famous places differ on whether anything is actually on. The National Museum of Korea, Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Korean Folk Village, Suwon Hwaseong Media Art and the Andong International Mask Dance Festival, in order, with whether they open on Chuseok day itself, what it costs and how to get there.

At a glance

  • Order follows the overall index, built from search interest (Naver DataLab), cumulative mentions, news in the last 60 days, and fit with holiday programs. Only places with a confirmed holiday program over the break are here.
  • First, the National Museum of Korea runs free traditional performances at Yeollin Madang on the 24th, 26th and 27th, but closes on Chuseok day. Second, Gyeongbokgung: the four palaces, Jongmyo and the royal tombs are free for all four days, 24 to 27 September.
  • The Korean Folk Village has the thickest holiday program, from the seongju gosa rite at 11:30 on Chuseok day through to ganggangsullae. Suwon Hwaseong Media Art lights the fortress wall every night from 18:00 to 22:00.
  • The Andong International Mask Dance Festival runs from the 24th to 4 October, with the opening ceremony at 19:00 on Chuseok day. It is the only one outside the capital region that covers the whole holiday.

If the holiday is still unplanned, you are probably after one day out once the ancestral rites are done. Read through the articles and official notices from early September and two groups appear: places running a holiday program, and places that only open the doors. Quite a few close on Chuseok day itself, Friday the 25th.

What matters first is what actually runs across those four days. Then whether it opens on the day, what it costs, and whether you can get there without a car. The national museums put on free holiday performances but all close on the day. Gyeongbokgung stays open, free, all four days.

For hands-on things with children in the daytime, the Korean Folk Village. For an evening out, Suwon Hwaseong. Outside the capital region, only Andong covers the whole holiday.

If you want one performance out of the holiday, Yongsan is the easy option. Search interest here is the highest of the ten candidates.

The listed stage is Yeollin Madang (열린마당). It runs on three days, the 24th, 26th and 27th, twice each at 13:00 and 15:00. The 24th has the Gyeol Korean traditional orchestra and Samul Gwangdae. The 26th has Sori ON and Yeonhui Company Yuhui. The 27th at 15:00 is pansori singer Kim Jun-su with Second Moon.

It is free on the spot, with no booking. The museum closes on the 25th, Chuseok day. If the day itself is your only free one, number 2 suits better.

Watch out
it closes on Chuseok day. The stage is outdoors, so rain can change the schedule

If any of the four days will do, a palace is the easiest call. From the 24th to the 27th, Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung, plus Jongmyo and the Joseon royal tombs, are free. Only Changdeokgung's Huwon is left out.

Jongmyo, which normally needs a booking, takes walk-ins for these four days. The guard changing ceremony in front of Gwanghwamun runs at 10:00 and 14:00. The sentry ceremony is at 11:00 and 13:00, the patrol ceremony at 15:00. That scene everyone photographs happens five times a day.

The National Folk Museum inside the grounds has two days of free programs, the 26th and 27th. It closes on Chuseok day. Across the road at Gwanghwamun Square, traditional games and performances run free all four days. Unhyeongung also runs traditional games and Korean music from 11:00 to 17:00 across the four days.

Watch out
four free days will draw crowds, though there are no crowd reports yet. The folk museum closes on the day

If you want to shape songpyeon and thresh rice with children in the daytime, head to Yongin. From the 24th to the 27th, "House to House on Chuseok Day" runs across the village.

At 11:30 on Chuseok day there is a seongju gosa rite with a farmers' band. At the performance hall, visitors join hands and step into the ganggangsullae once the show ends. "Songpyeon at the Nobleman's House" shares out from 16:00. At "Mr. O's Early Rice Harvest" you thresh rice and pound a mortar. The Hanguk-gwan bibimbap buffet runs at lunchtime on the 25th and 26th only.

If the rites fill the daytime and you go out at night, the Suwon fortress wall fits. From 19 September to 6 October it lights up daily from 18:00 to 22:00. All four holiday days fall inside that.

At Hwaseomun, the 35-minute panoramic projection "Saebit Dongnak" plays. The foundation's notice lists three showings, at 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30. "Oreubit Water Pagoda" at Jangan Park reacts as you move. "Suwon Universe" at Jangammun wraps around you at 360 degrees. The three sit along a 1.5km route.

Seating at Hwaseomun is free on weekdays, ₩5,000 at weekends and on public holidays. All four holiday days are a weekend or a public holiday, so the seating costs. From the bus transfer center at Suwon Station exit 4, buses 11, 13 and 60 take 10 to 15 minutes.

Watch out
seating is paid over the holiday. It is outdoors, so a wet night can change the screenings

Overseas companies come from 23 countries, 27 teams in all. Korean traditional mask dance brings 17 groups. Ten madangguk and new-work teams join them. Hahoe Village stages Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori. At 19:00 on the 26th, Seonyu Julbulnori lights up Mansongjeong and Buyongdae.

Choosing in more detail

  • If Chuseok day is your only day out — Gyeongbokgung Palace. The museum closes that day while the palaces and Jongmyo stay open. Time it for the 14:00 guard changing.
  • If you want four days that cost nothing — Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun Square. The palaces and Jongmyo are free, and the games across the road run free all four days.
  • If you have primary school children — Korean Folk Village. Songpyeon is shared out at 16:00, and threshing and pounding are not things you can do at home.
  • If it is adults and one performance — National Museum of Korea, 15:00 on the 27th. Kim Jun-su with Second Moon is the last stage of the holiday.
  • If you go out after dinner — Suwon Hwaseong. It stays lit until 22:00 and the bus from Suwon Station takes 15 minutes, so a late start is fine.
  • If you add a day to the trip home — Andong. Seonyu Julbulnori at 19:00 on the 26th is the only showing inside the holiday.

Outdoor stages change in the rain. Open that day's official notice once before you leave.

Ask before you go

1Do national museums outside Seoul run Chuseok events too?

They do. National museums in Chuncheon, Cheongju, Gongju, Jeonju, Daegu, Gyeongju, Jinju, Gimhae and elsewhere hold traditional games and performances between the 22nd and the 30th. The museums listed in the Seoul Shinmun article close on the 25th, Chuseok day.

2Why are Gwanghwamun Square, Namsangol Hanok Village and Seokchon Lake not on the list?

All three have free traditional games and performances over the holiday. They sit at the same price as the free palace opening, free outdoor programs in Seoul, so the five slots went to places of a different character. Gwanghwamun Square appears in the Gyeongbokgung section anyway.

3Is Changdeokgung's Huwon free as well?

No. Huwon is the one exclusion from this free opening. Expect the usual booking and admission fee there.

4What about the Gwangalli drone show's Chuseok special?

One showing only, at 20:00 on Saturday the 26th, with 3,000 drones and lasers. It is free with no booking. A single showing dropped it out of the ranking, but if you are in Busan, that is your evening.

5Where do I find Korean Folk Village prices?

Not in the articles. The ticket page on the website lists day passes and evening passes. Opening hours change with the season, so check that same page the day before you go.

6If I take the train to Andong, how do I get to the festival site?

The official notice gives no shuttle or bus route. The site is around 239 Yuksa-ro in Andong, and inquiries go to 054-840-3400. Call before you set out and ask about shuttles first.
