A greenhouse outing need not end beneath the glass roof. After exploring tropical and Mediterranean plants or aquatic plants and succulents, you can continue into outdoor gardens and woods.

At a glance

  • See tropical and Mediterranean plants or aquatic plants and succulents in the greenhouses, then continue outdoors through gardens and woods.
  • Bucheon Botanical Garden is free if you visit only the botanical garden. Admission covering the museum and Mureungdowon Arboretum is priced separately.
  • Supia takes advance reservations. When choosing between SUWON ARBORETUM IRWOL and SUWON ARBORETUM YEONGHEUNG, consider their different terrain: level gardens versus a hilly arboretum.

Once you know which plants you want to see, consider how much walking you want to do outside. A visit focused on the greenhouse calls for different preparation from one that includes a garden walk. These five botanical gardens and arboretums in Seoul and Gyeonggi have both indoor viewing spaces and outdoor sections.

What admission covers also varies. Some let you visit the botanical garden alone for free; others cover the greenhouse and outdoor themed gardens with one ticket. If you are coming to observe plants indoors, you need not plan to walk around an entire large park.

TropicalMediterranean greenhouses and outdoor themed gardens

For plants from different climates, consider Seoul Botanical Garden in Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. Its greenhouse presents gardens from 12 cities around the world, based on tropical and Mediterranean climates. Within a single greenhouse, you can explore how plant cultures differ with the climate.

The Themed Garden includes both the greenhouse and outdoor themed gardens planted with species native to Korea. The open forest, lake garden and wetland garden are always open free of charge. You can focus on the greenhouse or extend your visit with an outdoor walk.

Exits 3 and 4 of Magongnaru Station, served by Line 9 and the Airport Railroad, connect to the open forest. For the Themed Garden, you can also approach from exit 8 of Yangcheon Hyanggyo Station on Line 9. The walk from the open forest to the greenhouse is outdoors. There is no direct indoor connection between the station and the greenhouse.

To keep the cost of seeing greenhouse plants down, consider Bucheon Botanical Garden in Chunui-dong, Bucheon. The current admission guidance lists visits to the botanical garden alone as free. Separate daytime admission to Nature Ecology Park, covering the natural ecology museum and Mureungdowon Arboretum, costs ₩4,000 per adult.

The aquatic garden displays plants that grow in water, while the subtropical garden has palms and foliage plants. The succulent garden displays cacti and succulents. It is a good place to explore the different environments plants live in.

You can continue to Mureungdowon Arboretum after the greenhouse, but that section is not indoors. For rail access, use Kkachiul Station on Line 7. Plan your admission coverage and walking distance around whether you want to see only the botanical garden or add the museum and outdoor arboretum.

Hours
March–October: 09:30–18:00, last admission 17:30. Closed Mondays, 1 January, Lunar New Year's Day and Chuseok Day; if Monday is a public holiday, closed the following day

TropicalSubtropical plants and a skywalk

Consider Supia when you want to see tropical and subtropical plants alongside a walk in Sangdong Lake Park. This greenhouse in Sang-dong, Bucheon, includes palm, foliage, and olive and baobab gardens. It also has a skywalk, making it a good fit if you want to enjoy the route through the displays as well as the plants.

Supia takes advance reservations through Bucheon City's public service reservation system. On-site tickets are available only when reservations have not filled capacity. If you have a date in mind, booking ahead is the better way to plan.

The official directions use exit 1 of Samsan Gymnasium Station on Line 7. You can enjoy both the greenhouse and Sangdong Lake Park, but a park walk means going outdoors. Decide separately whether to keep your visit to the greenhouse or extend it into the lake park.

Hours
March–November daytime hours: 10:00–18:00. Closed Mondays; if Monday is a public holiday, closed the next weekday
Watch out

An exhibition greenhouse and walks through level ecological gardens

For an exhibition greenhouse paired with a walk through level gardens, consider SUWON ARBORETUM IRWOL in Cheoncheon-dong, Suwon. Its gardens represent different environments, including woodland, grassland, wetland and dryland. A visit is less about seeing a single greenhouse and more about walking through the different conditions in which plants grow.

The first recommended route passes through the visitor center, ornamental garden and exhibition greenhouse. It then continues through the woodland garden, conifer garden and grassland garden, among others. The listed distance is 1.2 km, covering both the greenhouse and outdoor gardens.

The directions advise transferring to local bus 27 or 27-1 at exit 2 of Sungkyunkwan University Station. Get off at Yulcheon High School and walk to the arboretum.

GreenhouseThemed gardens and woodland walks on hilly terrain

For a greenhouse visit followed by woodland trails, consider SUWON ARBORETUM YEONGHEUNG in Yeongtong-dong, Suwon. Suwon Tourism describes it as a hilly arboretum. The Blooming Garden sits on the slope in front of the visitor center. The gardens continue through a lawn and seasonal flower garden to a water-lily pond and greenhouse.

The official themed-garden route includes the greenhouse, hardy rubber tree grove and hydrangea garden, among other areas. Its listed distance is 1.5 km. A separate 2.5 km route passes through the exhibition woodland. The chance to add a woodland walk is appealing, but this is a different outing from resting entirely indoors.

The directions advise walking from exit 4 of Cheongmyeong Station toward Gyeonggi Suwon International School. If level gardens are your priority, consider SUWON ARBORETUM IRWOL. SUWON ARBORETUM YEONGHEUNG suits a day when you want to add an outdoor woodland walk.

Choosing in more detail

  • If you want a free outdoor walk after the greenhouse — Seoul Botanical Garden. Extend your visit into the open forest, lake garden and wetland garden.
  • If you want to save on botanical garden admission — Bucheon Botanical Garden. You can plan a botanical-garden-only visit separately from one that adds the museum and arboretum.
  • If you want a greenhouse stop on a Sangdong Lake Park outing — Bucheon Lake Botanical Garden Supia. Check the advance-booking conditions and combine it with a park walk.
  • If you want to explore the differences between woodland, grassland and wetland — SUWON ARBORETUM IRWOL. Walk through gardens with different growing environments.
  • If you want a longer walking route — SUWON ARBORETUM YEONGHEUNG. There is a separate exhibition woodland route in addition to the themed-garden route.

Ask before you go

1Which exit should I use when bringing a stroller to Bucheon Botanical Garden?

The official transport guidance recommends taking the elevator at exit 3 of Kkachiul Station, then crossing at the crosswalk. Plan around this route rather than exit 1, which appears in the standard walking directions.

2Can I drink beverages in the greenhouses at SUWON ARBORETUM IRWOL and SUWON ARBORETUM YEONGHEUNG?

Both arboretums prohibit bringing in or consuming food and beverages in their greenhouses. The beverage exception in the outdoor visiting rules does not apply inside the greenhouses.

3If I qualify for free admission to Supia, can I skip the ticket office?

Visitors eligible for free or discounted admission must still collect a ticket at the ticket office. This procedure is specified in the October 2026 reservation guidance.
