At a glance

  • Five Myeongdong places compared on foreign-language help and how you order. Myeongdong Kyoja is a pay-first kiosk, Hadongkwan a paper ticket at the till, Hansik Wangbijip a booking app.
  • Only Hadongkwan opens at 07:00, and it closes at 16:00. Three stay open past 22:00: Hansik Wangbijip (23:00), Yeongyang Center (22:30) and Hamcho Ganjang Gejang (22:00).
  • One meal for one person runs from ₩12,000 for kalguksu at Myeongdong Kyoja to ₩45,000 for the gejang set at Hamcho Ganjang Gejang.
  • Three list an English menu: Myeongdong Kyoja, Hadongkwan and Hansik Wangbijip. Reviews say Japanese was understood at Hamcho, and Yeongyang Center gives no notice of an English menu.

If you are travelling in Korea and stop by Myeongdong, one meal will happen here, lunch or dinner. Myeongdong has long carried a reputation as a tourist strip: expensive, not worth it. Yet a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) house with 505 Diningcode ratings sits right in the middle of it.

Where does a visiting friend actually get stuck? Not at the menu, but at the counter. A pay-first kiosk, a paper ticket from the till, a screen that shows you how to eat, a place where staff grill for you, a chicken you tear with your hands. All five are different.

This piece looks at whether there is help in another language, how the queue works, how late each place stays open and what one person pays.

For a bowl of gomtang first thing in the morning, go to Hadongkwan. To grill meat late at night, go to Hansik Wangbijip.

If your friend has no idea what to eat first in Korea, start at Myeongdong Kyoja Main Branch. Walk in from exit 8 of Myeongdong Station along Myeongdong 10-gil and a whole four-storey building is the noodle house. There are only four dishes — kalguksu, mandu (dumplings), bibim-guksu (cold noodles in chilli sauce) and summer kongguksu (chilled soybean noodles) — with photos on the wall. Choose at the kiosk by the door, pay first, and staff find you a seat.

The broth is chicken-based, and many reviews call it deep yet clean. The dumpling skins are thin enough to see the filling through, with garlic chives inside. The kimchi is heavy on garlic, so tell any visiting friends in advance.

Shared tables are the default, so a pair of you will sit beside strangers. Turnover is fast, though, and review after review says they were seated within 10 minutes if they avoided the noon peak. Of the five, this is the cheapest.

Hours
Daily 10:30–21:00 (last order 20:30), closed on Seollal and Chuseok day
Watch out
Shared tables are the default, and some reviews report waiting more than 30 minutes between 12:00 and 14:00. On a day you want a table to yourselves, go to Hansik Wangbijip Euljiro at number 4.

Hadongkwan opens at 07:00 and closes at 16:00. It shuts earlier if the broth runs out, so go before lunch to be safe. The menu is two things: gomtang (clear beef soup) and suyuk (sliced boiled beef).

Five minutes' walk from Myeongdong Station brings you to a gomtang house that started in 1939. You pay at the till first and take a paper ticket to your seat. The rice comes ladled with hot broth in a heavy brass bowl.

Under the menu, in Korean and English, it says you can have it without offal. If you dislike tripe and intestine, ask for meat only. The broth is clear and mild, so you season it yourself with salt and the juice from the kkakdugi radish kimchi. The side dishes are sparse, and at ₩18,000 a bowl people do call it expensive.

Watch out
Closed on Sundays and done at 16:00. You cannot go on the day you land on an evening flight, so put it in for the next morning.

Hamcho Ganjang Gejang is the priciest of the five, at ₩45,000 for a one-person set. Should it have been left out, then? It could not be. It sits in the basement of a mall towards exit 8 of Myeongdong Station. The room is dressed with plants, and a screen at the table shows you how to eat gejang (raw crab cured in soy sauce).

One Trip.com review says Japanese was understood, so ordering felt easy. A Diningcode review notes that foreign diners are overwhelmingly the majority. The soy-cured crab is not salty, and people keep saying a bowl of rice just disappears.

Booking is available, and one review says it is better to call ahead. Another notes plenty of foreign diners even at 16:00. Prices differ by source, so ask about the set price on the phone once.

At ₩45,000 a head it does not fit a day when the budget is under ₩15,000. Prices differ by source, so call to check before you go.

Where the noodle house means shared tables, Hansik Wangbijip Euljiro takes bookings. Three minutes from exit 5 of Euljiro 1-ga Station, then down to the basement. The name says Euljiro, but the address is Myeongdong. One review says the tray comes out as neatly as at an upmarket hanjeongsik house.

Staff grill the meat from start to finish. The hanwoo set for two is ₩96,000, so order meat when there are two or more of you. On your own, the yukhoe bibimbap tray at ₩20,000 arrives as a full spread.

There is an English menu, and you can book through Naver Place or Catch Table. One review mentions about 10 minutes in the waiting seats at lunch. It stays open until 23:00, so you can still grill meat on a day you arrive late.

One review line — a Myeongdong classic — says almost everything about Yeongyang Center Main Branch. It is about 150m from Myeongdong Station. This is the house that first served electric-roast whole chicken in 1960. Odd thing is, samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) now sells as well as the chicken.

You tear the chicken with your hands and dip it in salt. Pickled radish comes with it. One review says the skin is nutty and salty, better than the meat.

Samgyetang is ₩20,500, and at lunch there is a chicken set for ₩15,000. The crowds peak at weekend lunch and dinner, and mid-afternoon is empty. There is no notice of an English menu, so you would have to call and ask.

Hours
Daily 10:30–22:30, closed on major holidays
Watch out
There is no notice of an English menu, and the price score of 3.3 is the lowest of the five. If ₩21,500 for a whole chicken is too much, go at lunch for the set.

Choosing in more detail

  • If a friend cannot take spice — Hadongkwan. The broth is clear and you season it yourself with salt. Easier than Myeongdong Kyoja, where the kimchi is heavy on garlic.
  • If nobody in the group speaks a word of Korean — Myeongdong Kyoja Main Branch. There is an English menu, and with only four dishes you point at the photo on the wall and you are done.
  • If you are with a Japanese friend — Hamcho Ganjang Gejang. Reviews say Japanese was understood, and the screen shows you how to eat it.
  • If you are in Myeongdong on a Sunday — Hansik Wangbijip Euljiro. Of the five, only Hadongkwan closes on Sundays; the rest open all year.
  • If three of you want to share one bird — Yeongyang Center Main Branch. A large chicken at ₩21,500 split three ways is a little over ₩7,000 each.
  • If you land on an evening flight and eat your first meal at 21:00 — Hansik Wangbijip Euljiro. Open until 23:00, last order at 22:00.
  • If lunch has to stay under ₩15,000 — Myeongdong Kyoja's kalguksu at ₩12,000, Yeongyang Center's chicken set at ₩15,000. Both are fine to order on your own.

Prices are as of September 2026, and Hamcho Ganjang Gejang's differed by source. On a day with a fixed budget for one meal, one phone call to the restaurant is the surest thing. If you are travelling in Korea and you make it to Myeongdong, have a bowl of Myeongdong Kyoja's kalguksu before you leave. Your time and your budget will decide the other four.

Ask before you go

1Card or cash in Myeongdong restaurants?

Hadongkwan states that it takes both cash and card at the till. Myeongdong Kyoja takes payment at the kiosk. The other three give no notice of payment methods, so carry a card.

2Can you drive and park at any of them?

Hansik Wangbijip Euljiro lists one hour free parking in the building, and Hamcho Ganjang Gejang lists parking as available. Myeongdong Kyoja and Yeongyang Center have no parking. Hadongkwan gives no parking information.

3Does Yeongyang Center Main Branch have an English menu?

There is no notice of an English menu. All that exists is a number of reviews saying plenty of foreign diners come. Calling ahead saves a wasted trip.

4Does anywhere do takeaway?

Myeongdong Kyoja Main Branch has takeaway dumplings on the menu. The other four give no takeaway information, so you would have to ask on the spot.

5Are Myeongdong Kyoja's main branch and annexe different places?

There are two on Myeongdong 10-gil: the main branch at number 29 and the annexe at number 8. One review says the annexe was used as the main branch while the main building was under construction, so check the map before you go.

6Can you use a booking app without a Korean phone number?

The Catch Table global app takes bookings without a domestic number or Korean identity verification. Hansik Wangbijip Euljiro is listed on Catch Table. For Hamcho Ganjang Gejang, book by phone.
